Volunteering at The Salmon Lake Annual Picnics & Fran and Jack Harris Memorial Regatta
Please see the roles and responsibilities SALACOA seeks to fill for the Annual picnic
The Salmon Lake Cottage Owners’ Association (SALACOA) hosts an annual Salmon Lake Picnic for our lake residents, their families and friends. The picnic takes place each year on the Saturday of the August long weekend from 12:00 to 5:00 pm.
Main Draw Prizes
Solicit local businesses for donations to the picnic's Main Draw Prizes, as well as receive financial and prize donations from general membership. Many lake residents also donate prizes. Soliciting local businesses usually commences at the start of the new year. We also receive financial and prize donations from our general membership. The financial donations are used to offset the costs of the annual picnic, mainly for the purchase of game medals, but possibly food, beverages and other picnic supplies.
Ticket Sellers
A team of ticket sellers commence selling advance raffle tickets for the main draw prizes, and hand deliver picnic information packages, door to door, starting the July long weekend. Ticket sellers earn a percentage of their sales, and the Association is able to authorize their work hours as a portion of their required high school volunteer credit. We generally require four or more ticket sellers, who are assigned a geographic section of the lake i.e. North-West, North-East, South-West and South-East.
Different teams also sell tickets during the picnic event for draw prizes, food and beverages.
Picnic Site Preparation and Clean-up
Other teams of volunteers ensure the public landing grounds are free of large holes and rocks, post signage, clean the outhouses, maintain the public landing dock, and position the swim platform and docking rope. In past years, picnic volunteers have even shuttled people from their boat to the dock. At the end of the day, another team restores the public landing site to its original state, packs up tables, takes away garbage and ensures the grounds are free of debris.
Picnic Food Preparation and Food Service
A team of volunteers pick up the food and other supplies on the day of the picnic, set up the barbecue and serving tables, prepare and serve the barbecued food, and arrange to have the barbecue and tables removed.
Picnic Events and the Swim Race Events
Other teams of volunteers lead the picnic games and swim race, for children, youth and adults. Over the years, this role has been taken on by some Salmon Lake families and their friends; many whom have lead the games for numerous consecutive years.
